Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 12 oz cranberries Fresh or frozen cranberries give a tartness that balances perfectly with sweetness.
  • 1 cup apples, peeled and diced Sweet apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji bring a lovely flavor.
  • ¾ cup sugar Adjust the sugar to taste; you can use brown sugar for a deeper flavor.
  • ¼ cup water Helps to create a silky sauce texture as the cranberries cook.
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth and depth; use more or less based on your personal taste.
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves A pinch of cloves gives a holiday flavor to your Apple Cranberry Sauce.

Equipment

  • medium saucepan

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 12 oz of cranberries, 1 cup of peeled and diced apples, ¾ cup of sugar, and ¼ cup of water. Stir the mixture gently to ensure the sugar begins to dissolve while the fruits start to release their juices.
  2. Increase the heat slightly to bring the mixture to a boil, allowing the cranberries to burst open, which takes about 5 minutes. Once boiling, lower the heat to a simmer.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let your Apple Cranberry Sauce simmer for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to evenly distribute the flavors.
  4. If desired, add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves during the last few minutes of cooking.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat once the sauce has thickened. Allow it to cool for a few minutes in the pot before transferring it to a bowl.
